Lakshmi Puja

Diwali is the auspicious day when it is believed that Goddess Lakshmi reunited with her husband after emerging from the milky ocean. It was the outcome of Samudra Manthan (churning of sea) with the mutual efforts of Gods and Demons. All preparations as well as decorations are done in order to welcome Goddess Lakshmi as according to Hindus, the Goddess pays a visit to the homes of her devotees. Lakshmi is the Goddess of health, wealth and prosperity. As soon as she left the side of Lord Indra, even he turned into a bankrupt and defeated man. So she is appeased by everyone so that she keeps her blissful hand on them.

Method Of Lakshmi Puja

Clean the room thoroughly where puja rituals are going to be performed. Spread a sheet and put in the middle of it a handful of grains neatly. Place a three-fourth water filled Kalash with betel leaves covering it's mouth. The puja samagri (ingredients required to perform rituals) are a coin, flowers, betel nuts, mango leaves, roli, rice and others.

It is customary in India to commence any important task by offering prayers to Lord Ganesha. He is called as the Vighnaharta, which means the rescuer from obstructions and the bestower of wisdom. Thus, first of all the idol of Lord Ganesha is placed. Now place the idol of Goddess Lakshmi and light the oil lamp. Put a haldi, sandalwood and kumkum mixture spot on the forehead of the idols and offers flowers as well. Vedic or Pauranic mantras are chanted after it as the devotee showers on the deities flower petals. Now place the idol of the deities in a flat mouthed vessel and give the deity a panchamitra bathe. Panchamitra is a mixture of milk, curd, ghee, butter, honey and sugar. Now clean the idol with water and wipe. Place her back beside the idol of Lord Ganesha. Offer a garland made of marigold flowers with betel leaves to the deities along with puffed rice, batasha, sweets, coconut and fruits.

Offering prayers to the place where you keep your money and jewels is also a vital part of the ritual. At last perform arti one by one. Arti is accompanied with the chiming of bells and light sounds of claps. Performing puja of Goddess Lakshmi means offering prayers to Mahasaraswati, Mahalakshmi and Mahakali, the three forms of Goddess.

The puja rituals are followed by exchanging gifts and bursting of firecrackers on the Diwali day. It is a day filled with fun and merriment. The atmosphere is shining with the decorative lights as well as the light of happiness glowing in every person's heart.
