Legendary Story Behind Durga Puja
The popular image of Maa Kali depicts her fury and ravenous as she can be seen standing on the chest of Lord Shiva with her tongue hanging out of her mouth. Maa Kali, the savior of heaven and earth from the evil clutches of demons like Shambhu and Nishambhu accompanied by Dakini and Kogini went to clear the demons from the face of the universe, she lost her control. Her barbarous acts did not see the person coming in her way. She started killing everyone thereby creating a chaos. To save the Gods, Lord Shiva had to intervene. In order to do so, he deliberately threw himself under the feet of Goddess Kali. The picture portrays the same moment.
Significance Of Kali Puja
Another common posture of Maa Kali is the one where she is wearing the garland of the heads of the demons. The main purpose of performing Kali Puja is to wash away our sins and get rid of evil traits like ego, anger, pride, envy and others. The sixteenth day of Karthika is the auspicious occasion on which the Kali puja is observed. Being a form of Tantrik Puja, the rituals are performed at the midnight of the Amavasya night. We actually, offer prayers to Shyama Kali, who was the first of the ten incarnations of the Goddess Durga.
