Deepawali, the widely celebrated festival of India brings along much festivities and merriment. Exchanging of exquisite gifts, offerings of tempting sweets, get together with friends and loved ones make these celebrations all the more lively. Reputed as the festival of the victory of virtue over vice, Diwali is better known as the occasion of happiness and cheerfulness. This is the very reason, why the celebrations of Diwali extend for five delightful days.

These five days of Diwali are looked upon as the perfect occasion of paying one's obeisance to the Supreme Power for all His blessings. Thus each day holds great importance in itself. During these five days, people decorate their houses, light diyas and lamps, offer pujas to Goddess Lakhmi and Lord Ganesha, invite all their cherished ones for partaking in the tempting and mouth watering feasts of Diwali and burst fire crackers.

The first day is known as Dhanteras, the day meant for renovating and embellishing homes as well as office premises. It is a belief that Goddess Lakshmi pays visits to homes during this particular day and thus people prefer to keep their homes clean in order to welcome the goddess with much respect. The second day is known as the day of Choti Diwali, which is also known as 'Narak Chaturdasi'.

The Choti Diwali is also celebrated with much vigor and zeal, as people worship Goddess Lakshmi, decorate their houses with exquisite rangolis, burst the crackers and light diyas to mark the day. The third day of diwali is preserved for paying one's prayers to goddess Lakshmi while the fourth day of 'Padwa' commemorates the legend of Lord Krishna lifting up the Mount Govardhan.

The final and the fifth day of Diwali is known by the name of 'Bhiya -dooj'; a day specially reserved for celebrating the relationship of brother and sister.
